Closet Storage Strategies for Renters

As a renter, you might struggle to keep your closet organized. The key is to make the most of the space you have—which often involves some creativity. Follow these tips for a tidier closet.

1. Find extra space in unexpected places. You’re probably already taking full advantage of the drawers and rods in your closet, but are you utilizing the space in between these fixtures? You can instantly double the room for hangers by adding a second tension rod beneath the permanent one (it’s easy to install and remove). Also, try under-the-shelf baskets or over-the-door shoe organizers to make the most of your closet.

2. Tuck away any clothes you don’t need. Chances are you aren’t getting much use out of your tank tops and shorts right now, so they don’t need to be front and center in your closet. When clothing is out of season, fold it and place it in plastic boxes that can be tucked under your bed, or find another unused spot to house the garments for the time being.

3. Add organizational accessories. It might seem counterintuitive to add more stuff to your closet in order to maximize space, but it makes total sense when that stuff includes organizational items. Corral your folded sweaters and t-shirts in baskets, use dividers to keep tall stacks of jeans neat, or add some hooks to the mix for scarves.
